Once again, Central Chambers are delighted to be marching with our fellow lawyers in support of equality under the law for LGBTQIA+ people. It’s time to get wigs and robes on and to brave the Mancunian weather for Pride 2019.
For the second year in a row, Central Chambers will be the smallest set present but with the largest number of marchers – a fact about which we are really proud.
We will be providing a space for all of the lawyers marching to get ready, to get some breakfast, to perfect their banners, and to get their “Equality Under The Law” t-shirts on.
If you see us on the march, once again led by the Crystal Stormtrooper, give a shout and a wave.
We feel that it is important to remember that the first Pride march was literally a riot. It is a sad reality that reports of hate crimes against LGBTQIA+ people are very significantly on the rise in Greater Manchester and all over the country. But we are Manchester and we are supposed to be different and if a diverse and friendly city like ours can see such vile attacks on the rise, imagine what less “tolerant” places are like right now.
We may not have the same difficulties with the police in Greater Manchester (anymore) as faced in the Stonewall Riots but victims of hate crimes, discrimination in the workplace, disproportionate ill-treatment by the Home Office in the name of “controlling immigration”, and ignorance in prosecuting of some offences mean that there is all the more need to be visible in 2019.
Rights that are not protected are lost and Central Chambers consists of LGBTQIA+ community lawyers and allies who will never accept that slide back to the bad old days.
Remember that Pride is almost uniquely a celebration and a protest. We’ll see you there.
